The increase in fuel prices make people have to find a way to adapt. Based on a survey conducted by global research company, Kadence International, the majority of residents in five major cities in Indonesia to reduce their spending to buy cigarettes after gasoline rose last week.
"Due to rising fuel prices, there are several requirements that must be reduced, increased or expenditure allocation same. However, the majority of respondents reducing their spending to buy cigarettes, "said Managing Director of Kadence Indonesia, Vivek Thomas in exposure which took place in Jakarta, Wednesday, June 26, 2013.
Survey was conducted on 500 people in Greater Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Balikpapapan, and Napier. 50 percent of respondents are female and 50 percent were male. Age of the respondents ranged from 19-50 years. 70 percent of respondents are working and the rest do not work. The survey was conducted on May 23 to June 3, 2013 with a margin of error of 4.38.
According to the survey, 34 percent of respondents reducing their spending to buy cigarettes. In Jabodetabek, Surabaya and Balikpapan, make cigarettes as citizens first need to be cut in order to adapt to rising fuel prices. While in Medan and Makassar, will purchase cigarettes remain. Residents chose cutting spending on other needs than to reduce cigarette purchases.
"People tend to be lower Medan to buy credits while spending citizens Makassar chose to reduce household products, eating out, clothing, savings, water and electricity," said Vivek. Besides cigarettes, residents also chose to reduce the allocation of funds for eating out (57 percent), clothing and accessories (50 percent), and savings (41 percent).
Deputy Managing Director of Kadence Indonesia, Rajiv Lamba, said the increase in fuel will also make people delay plan to buy a motorcycle or a car. "For a while, the allocation of savings to fall, as well as a plan to buy a motorcycle or a car," he said.
